Won high points from Bourne, who commented: “Attractive bouquet of ripe plum and mulberries with a whiff of star anise. Juicy flavours, tight structure and a pleasingly energetic finish.” I was not far behind him, also noting rich sweet fruits with full body and depth of flavour. There’s plenty of mouth-coating tannin, suggesting the wine needs a little time to settle in.
This Grenache is made from 100% dry-farmed bush vines from three different sections of the Blind Spot vineyard, each with a slightly different aspect and elevation. Purchased by Willunga 100 in March of 2019, this Blewitt Springs site was planted over 50 years ago. Each parcel was vinified separately in stainless steel open top fermenters, two of which incorporated 20% whole bunches. After the fermentation, 60% of the wine was transferred to old French oak puncheons to undergo malolactic fermentation. It was aged on lees for 10 months prior to bottling.

An almost textbook growing season over 2020-2021 enabled the production of vibrant Grenaches. Cooler than normal conditions during the ripening season led to a later harvest. This resulted in a pristine varietal character that combines well with the power and tannin of the fruit, which is nicely lifted by lively natural acidity.
