Great Value

Fabivs Sant’Antimo DOC is made from the Syrah grape. It is dedicated to Fabivs de’ Vecchis, bishop of Montalcino, who built the Palazzo Piccolomini in 1672. Ciacci Piccolomini was one of the first estates in Montalcino that produced 100% Syrah wine. This was a dream come true for Giuseppe Bianchini, Paolo & Lucia Bianchini’s father, who was a great fan of French Syrahs.

A pure expression of Syrah, the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2016 Sant'Antimo Fabius is an impressive expression of the grape. Syrah always tends to show opulent richness and succulence, and although you certainly get that here, I'm also reminded of its Tuscan roots. It tends to be more compact and linear overall. This wine pulls in opposite directions, and that's what makes it most interesting. You will recognize those varietal characteristics for sure, but they are ultimately overridden by the wine's Tuscan identity. With 8,000 bottles made, this is terrific value.

Details of production
Located in the south east of the Montalcino region close to the beautiful medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the estate of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona can trace its roots back to the 17th century. The wine was dedicated to Fabivs de Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino, who in 1672 began the construction of the Palazzo Piccolomini. Fabivs was one of the first wines in Montalcino produced exclusively from Syrah grapes .They have a total holding of 220 hectares of the rolling Tuscan hills bordered by the Orcia River which helps moderate the temperature of this hot dry part of the region. The Fabivs is 100% Syrah, these French vines were planted in the ‘del Conte’ vineyard, whose terroir and microclimate are particularly well-suited to this varietal. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel and glass concrete vats. Ageing takes place in French and American 3hl oak barriques for approximately 15 months.

Tasting notes
Very intense ruby red in colour. The bouquet is intense, complex and persistant with hints of blueberry, plum and cherry enriched by elegant spicy notes. Warm, soft, well balanced, persistant with round tannins. It expresses power, persistance, delicacy and a great character.

How to serve
Great companion to stewed and roasted meat and game such as hare, pheasant and wild boar. Excellent with mature cheeses.
