Intense from the off, with a penetrating nose and finish, scored with ozone, smelling salts, whetstone and a whiff of sulphur. Let there be no doubt this comes from a volcanic, Atlantic island! Flavours of apricot chutney, mustard seed, mahogany and Fernet-Branca-like herbs etch the palate. The sweetness (110g/l), honeyed and delicate, deftly keeps pace with a rapier-like charge of steely, grapefruity acidity (9g/l total acidity). Terrific precision and purity.
The Blandy family is unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. Throughout its long history on the island, the family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine. Members of the family continues to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811: 2 centuries of fine wine production. Today Blandy’s is the leading producer of Madeira wine and is managed by seventh generation family member Chris Blandy. Blandy’s winemaker, Francisco Albuquerque, is one of the islands most awarded winemakers, receiving IWSC’s “Fortified Winemaker of the year” in 3 consecutive years.

In 2011 the Blandy family acquired the Madeira wine company, an association of Madeira producers founded in 1913 of which it joined in the 1920s and had been the controlling shareholder since the 1970s.

the Madeira Wine company under the Blandy family is the largest and most awarded producer and exporter of Madeira wine. It’s brands include Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon, Miles, Leacock’s and Atlantis (table wine).

Cossart Gordon (who’s wines also feature in this release), is the oldest company in the
Madeira Wine trade, having been established in 1745. It is almost one if it’s most famous, renowned for it’s Bual wines, by 1850 the firm was said to be shipping half the growth of the island. The firm joined the Madeira Wine Company in the 1920s with Blandy’s. Blandy’s and the Madeira Wine Company
