Te Mata

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Coleraine did for Hawke’s Bay Bordeaux blends what Cloudy Bay later did for Marlborough Sauvignon, dramatically raising the bar for red wine in New Zealand. Bob Campbell MW, Decanter

The Te Mata estate is New Zealand's oldest and has been in production since 1895. The modern history of Te Mata starts in 1982 when John Buck produced the first vintage of what was to become Te Mata's flagship wine. Inspired by the Cabernet dominated blends of classed growth Bordeaux, Coleraine is a wine of great finesse and an impressive capacity to age, as evidenced by a recent vertical tasting, at which the 1982 was rated 96 points by Bob Campbell MW. Perhaps most remarkable is that Coleraine continues to offer such great value.
